چکیده

Most logic-based AI research works at a meta-theoretical level, producing new logics and studying their properties. Little effort is made to show how these logics can be used to formalise object-level theories of common sense. In the spirit of Pat Hayes’s Naive Physics Manifesto, the present paper supplies a formalisation of a non-trivial benchmark problem in common sense physical reasoning, namely how to crack an egg. The formalisation is based on the event calculus.

Beyond Toy Problems : A Logical Formalization of the Egg - Cracking Domain ( Preliminary Report

Formal research in object-level commonsense reasoning (csr) has concentrated on toy problems|problems that require only a few axioms to formalize. The resulting body of research is often narrow, since scaling down a problem factors out much of the diiculty. This paper aims to reverse this trend. We tackle a substantial problem in csr: the formalization of egg cracking. To do this, we develop th...

A Generic Framework for Approximate Simulation in Commonsense Reasoning Systems

This paper introduces the Slick architecture and outlines how it may be applied to solve the well known Egg-Cracking Problem. In contrast to other solutions to this problem that are based on formal logics, the Slick architecture is based on general-purpose and low-resolution quantitative simulations. On this benchmark problem, the Slick architecture offers greater elaboration tolerance and allo...

Formalizing a Problem in Commonsense Physical Reasoning: The Egg-Cracking Problem

All true believers shall break their eggs at the convenient end: and which is the convenient end, seems, in my humble opinion, to be left to every man's conscience, or at least in the power of the chief magistrate to determine.

Preparation of cross-linked hen-egg white lysozyme crystals free of cracks

Cross-linked protein crystals (CLPCs) are very useful materials in applications such as biosensors, catalysis, and X-ray crystallography. Hence, preparation of CLPCs is an important research direction. During the preparation of CLPCs, an often encountered problem is that cracks may appear in the crystals, which may finally lead to shattering of the crystals into small pieces and cause problem i...

Mid-Sized Axiomatizations of Commonsense Problems: A Case Study in Egg Cracking

All true believers shall break their eggs at the convenient end: and which is the convenient end, seems, in my humble opinion, to be left to every man's conscience, or at least in the power of the chief magistrate to determine. Abstract We present an axiomatization of a problem in commonsense reasoning, characterizing the proper procedure for cracking an egg and transferring its contents to a b...
